Conservative reactions to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials defended the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's name and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
Some Rightwing Figures Rally In Support of the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about protecting officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued
However, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no new data.
