Minister Says MoD Investigating Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Instructed to Refrain from Secret Talk in Cars.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid discussing classified matters in any vehicles.

Safety Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

This revelation follows claims from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.

Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

The broader defence environment underscores the importance of robust measures and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from transport usage to communication habits.
