Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
